One of the biggest benefits of growing in greenhouses compared to in the open field, is the control over growing conditions. There are many tools that can help you create the perfect environment for your plants. In this article we explore the usage and benefits of Climate Screens.
For the creation of the first climate screens, we have to go back to Sweden in the 1970’s. There was an energy crisis with high oil prices and petroleum shortages. Svensson had a lot of leftover products from the production of certain curtains and didn’t want that fabric to go to waste. It was through ingenuity and stubborn persistence that they realised they could also produce curtains for greenhouses! And after some testing and experimenting, Climate Screens were born.
Many materials and effects
There are many types of climate screens. Each made from different material that offer their own benefits. Just to give you an idea, Svensson currently has around 85 climate screen products on their website. It is important to be aware of the difference between these options and the effect the fabric can have on your production.
For example, a screen that reduces shading and energy, can also reduce ventilation. A simple solution seems to be to leave gaps between the screens, but that could disrupt the climate in the greenhouse which can influence your production.
Therefore, it could be in your best interest to have multiple layers of climate screens under each other. This allows you to fully control the growing conditions.

Reasons to use climate screens
Saving energy is one of the main reasons to use climate screens. Plants and their leaves radiate warmth. Climate screens keep that warmth off the cold roof. This creates less condensation, which means drier plants, less mould and fungal infections and less spraying.
Reduction of sunlight is another main reason for the use climate screens. During the summer the sun can be unbearable strong and hurt your plants. With climate screens you can protect the plants from the sun and/or diffuse the light throughout your greenhouse.
Since the climate screens are (automatically or manually) retractable, you can really give your plants what they need.
Other reasons are:
- Prevention of temperature drop
- Prevention of light emission from artificial light
- Reduction from draught
- Improving moisture balance
